If you live for the water, you know that summer in the Midwest isn’t complete without Lake Michigan. Whether you’re chasing a “big one” at dawn, teaching the kids to tube, or just enjoying a lazy float, those days on the lake are what we wait all winter for.
But a perfect day on the water starts on dry land. If you wait until the first 80-degree day in May to check your gear, you might find yourself stuck at the dock while everyone else is heading out.
At R Hobbs Insurance Agency, we want you to be first in line at the boat launch. Use our “Early Bird” checklist below to ensure your season is smooth sailing from day one.
The R. Hobbs Pre-Season Boating Checklist

- Check Oil & Filter: Don’t skip the basics. Check and replace the oil and oil filter to keep your engine running smoothly all summer long.
- Charge Your Battery: Winter is tough on batteries. Make sure yours is fully charged and check for any terminal corrosion before your first attempt to start the engine.
- Inspect Belts & Hoses: Rubber parts can crack or become brittle over the winter. Give them a close look (and a squeeze) to ensure they are still pliable and secure.
- Check the Propeller: Inspect your propeller for physical damage, dings, or signs of corrosion. A damaged propeller can cause vibrations that hurt your engine over time.
- Verify Safety Gear: This is the most important step! Ensure you have enough life jackets for everyone, check the expiration dates on your flares, and make sure your fire extinguisher and first-aid kit are ready for duty.
Don’t Forget the Paperwork
Before you hit the ramp, double-check that your registration is current for 2026. It’s also the perfect time to review your insurance policy. Does your current coverage include specialized roadside assistance for your trailer or fuel spill liability?
From all of us at R Hobbs Insurance Agency, we wish you a safe, sun-drenched, and fun-filled boating season!
P.S. Heading up to the Geneva Lake or the Northwoods this weekend? Make sure your trailer tires are aired up for the drive!
