Holiday Cooking Safety

If this holiday season finds you simmering, steeping or sautéing, here’s an important fact you should know: cooking is the top cause of home fires.

But a fire is easily avoidable if you are careful when you cook:

Dress for success. Avoid loose clothing or sleeves that could catch fire while you are standing over a stove.

Watch that pot. If there’s something on the stove, or in the broiler or oven, don’t leave the room. Kitchen fires often happen when no one is watching what’s cooking.

Avoid close encounters. Anything flammable—wooden cooking utensils, oven mitts, paper towels, dish towels and the like—should be a safe distance from your stove.

Handle with care. Turn pot handles so they face the back of the stove to prevent someone from accidently bumping into them and knocking the pots over.

Keep it clean. Wipe up any spills on your stovetop or in your oven, as built-up grease can catch fire.

In case of fire. If food cooking on the stove catches fire, cover the pan until it cools completely. For oven fires, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed.

When you’re finished cooking, be sure to turn off the stove, oven and/or broiler before you leave the kitchen. Attention to safety is one important way to protect your home and family. Another is to ensure you have the right insurance.
