Is Walking While Drunk Safe?

Mothers Against Drunk Driving and many other organizations have done a great job educating the public about the dangers of driving under the influence. While drunk driving is still a problem, its frequency has decreased pretty dramatically since these public awareness campaigns started. It’s quite simple: If you’re drunk, do not get behind the wheel of a car. Have a sober person drive instead, right? Absolutely! Or walk instead? Actually…wrong.

Believe it or not, foot-by-foot, mile-by-mile, drunk walking is eight times more dangerous than drunk driving. The same blurry vision and slowed reflexes that make you more likely to crash a car also make you more likely to weave in front of a bus, fall down stairs, etc. Please don’t confuse this: We are definitely not advocating drunk driving. It endangers everyone in the vicinity and is illegal. Friends don’t let friends drive drunk. But friends also don’t let friends walk drunk either.

Okay, so after drinking, you shouldn’t drive or walk. What can you do? Depending on where you are, you may still have plenty of options: taxi, bus, train, subway, trolley, etc. Or, ask a sober driver for a ride.

If you are in a crowded city like Chicago or Milwaukee, taxis and public transit are readily available.

If you’re in a smaller town or rural area where such public options are few or nonexistent, the only way to get from place-to-place is by driving. In that case, you surely went out with a designated driver, you responsible person! And remember: No friend will turn down your request to sleep on a couch because you’re too drunk to drive or walk.
