1. Vacuum the Coils

Dust, dirt, and pet hair (especially if you have a furry friend like Roy!) can clog the condenser coils at the bottom or back of your unit. When coils are dirty, the motor has to work overtime, which leads to overheating and higher energy bills.

  • The Fix: Use a vacuum attachment or a coil brush once every six months.

2. Check Your Door Seals

If your rubber gaskets are cracked or loose, cold air escapes. This forces the compressor to overwork.

  • The Fix: Wipe down the gaskets regularly with warm, soapy water. Try the “dollar bill test”—if you can pull a dollar bill out of the closed door easily, your seal needs replacing!

3. Ensure Good Airflow

Your fridge needs space to “breathe” to release heat. If it’s pushed too tight against the wall or crowded by cabinets, it can’t vent properly.

  • The Fix: Leave several inches of clearance around the top and sides.

4. Monitor Your Temperature

To prevent food spoilage, your fridge should be set between 35°F and 38°F. Setting it too cold wastes energy, but going above 40°F risks bacterial growth.

5. Don’t Overstuff

Air must be able to circulate through the shelves to keep everything at a consistent temperature. Blocking the internal vents puts undue strain on the motor.

Does Insurance Cover Spoiled Food?

This is a frequent question for our team here in Lincolnshire. Generally, a standard homeowners policy may cover food spoilage if it’s caused by a covered peril, such as a power outage after a major windstorm.

However, if your fridge simply “dies” due to age or lack of maintenance, insurance typically won’t cover the repair or the food. This is where an Equipment Breakdown Endorsement becomes a lifesaver—it’s an affordable way to add protection for mechanical failures that fall outside standard coverage.
